Welcome to Woodbridge Elementary School
A National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence!!
Welcome to ‘The Place to Be’! Woodbridge Elementary School is a Kindergarten to 4th grade school that has over 900 students, making it the biggest elementary school in the state of Delaware. We are an academic driven institution that accepts nothing less than the best from every student that steps through our doors. In return, the faculty, staff and administration give their best to the students each day in order to make them successful.
Our focus on academics has allowed us to be named a State of Delaware Superior School in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011; A National Distinguished Title I School (2010); A National Blue Ribbon School (2010) and received the State of Delaware Academic Achievement Award 2010, one of five school so honored by the State.
Our Academic programs include the Reading First approach to teaching Reading. Ninety minutes of every school day is devoted to teaching Reading. Thirty minutes for whole group and one hour for small group, where students rotate through independent practice, centers and teacher led small group instruction. The small groups are based on students’ levels and all instruction is differentiated.
To support efforts to improve reading comprehension for all students, the U.S. Department of Education released new resources on Doing What Works, the website that translates research-based practices into practical tools. The new content and topic, Improving K-3 Reading Comprehension, is based on a practice guide and set of recommendations developed by a panel of experts for the Institute of Education Sciences. Woodbridge Elementary School in Woodbridge School District is one of five schools featured under the Improving K-3 Reading Comprehension topic and appears in the following recommended practices: Teach Comprehension Strategies, Engage Students With Text, and Focus on Text Structure.
In Math, we use the Math Expression series. In Science, we teach the state recommended Smithsonian Science Curriculum and in Social Studies, we implement the State of Delaware lessons. We provide seven different Related Arts classes for the students; Physical Education, Library, Computers, Art, Critical Skills, Music and Enrichment.
Parent support is very important to us as well. We have several nights throughout the school year where we have parents and students come to school for different activities. Examples of those nights are: Curriculum Night, Red Raider Night, and Open House. We truly feel it takes everyone working together to educate a child.
Each year we have a Reading Challenge for the students and as a reward they vote on what they want the administration to do for the day. Past things the administrators have done are the male administrators wearing a dress, administration being duct taped to a wall, slimed and water balloons thrown at them. If the challenge is met, the students also get to have "Raiderpalooza" as a day to celebrate all the hard work done during the school year.
Everyone working hard with a purpose and towards the same goal makes WES a very special place. We pride ourselves on this fact and we are very proud to be called ‘The Place to Be’!
The staff and community of Woodbridge Elementary School believe that every child is a unique and special individual who can learn.
We believe that it is our responsibility to serve as facilitators for the nurturing and developing of every child's maximum potential- academically, physically, socially, and emotionally.
We are committed to providing opportunities that will assist the students in making self-directed, realistic, and responsible decisions when solving problems that may confront them in our multicultural, ever-changing world.
I am somebody, I will succeed.
In school, in life, I will achieve.
Let's join together to work and share.
Let's show the world we C.A.R.E.
At Woodbridge Elementary, we are a team.
At Woodbridge Elementary, we will reach our dream!
